What an incredible run up to National Day it’s been. It has had it's ups and down’s but it’s been awesome to see the huge amount of support we have received at Barbary Coast.
Summer has been elusive this year, as we have all been limited in what we can partake in as far as National Day activities are concerned. But our story comes from this inspirational journey and what we have learned. Whatever your views are on graffiti, it is nothing new in Gibraltar. The Gibraltar sovereignty referendum of 1967 saw a rise in street art and this movement caught our attention.
As a concept, the National Day t-shirt commemorates Gibraltar's first sovereignty referendum of 1967, a decisive step in the journey towards self-determination. The t-shirt represents a celebration of all things Gibraltar. The coming together of our 30,000 plus ‘locals’ to parade our national colours and celebrate our unique identity.
Under the slogan "we shall fight to the last but we shall never surrender". Painted on a wall at Chicardo’s passage (now demolished).

This t-shirt was created with so much pride and passion you will inadvertently think about it even if you are not actively using it. The end product embodies Gibraltar and our national pride, as it attempts to emboss our values, aspirations, attitudes, and opinions. It’s not about the t-shirt, it's about who we are.
During the run up to National Day we received an amazing comment through one of our social media feeds. It reads as follows:
“Referendum 1967. This was painted at Hospital Steps by Joseph Lara (Pepe), my late father. Happy to see it still lives on despite it being demolished.”
What a great quote...
“Happy to see it still lives on despite it being demolished.”
Thank you Rosina! It’s funny how father and daughter can express the same feelings using different words in differing contexts. It must be that Gibraltarian connection.
This story undoubtedly solidifies our original idea and make us want to work harder. We continue to be inspired by our unique history and the vision to create high quality outerwear that is comfy and trendy.
